This antique ring was made by Ostby & Barton Co., a jewelry manufacturing company founded in 1879 in Providence, Rhode Island when Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton became business partners. Prior to their partnership, Ostby trained to be a jeweler at the Royal School of Art in Norway. Their partnership ended in 1912 when Ostby died on the Titanic. Despite this catastrophe, Ostby’s daughter Helene carried on the family business with her brother and Ostby & Barton Co. continued to produce jewelry into the 1950s. To this day, collectors of antique jewelry look for the OB hallmark because of its quality craftsmanship and historical ties to the Titanic.
