Depicted on the obverse is the profile of a woman at left with wings emanating from her head, an allegorical depiction of the Italian Republic as a symbol of freedom and intelligence. Marked "REPVBBLICA ITALIANA.” On the reverse is Fra Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli, an Italian mathematician and friar who worked closely with Leonardo da Vinci and who was referred to as "The Father of Accounting and Bookkeeping.” Marked “FRA PACIOLI 1994 L500.” The lira was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002. It was first introduced by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1807 and was then adopted by the different states that would form the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
