This mid-century abstract of playful bright colors on a rich brown background was completed by American artist Gladys Goldstein (1918-2010). She was a member of the Artists League of New York, and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. “Celebration” is a remarkable painting not only because of its interplay between brown and brilliant spots of full-prism color, but also the texture of the paint. Goldstein frequently employed textures that would give a topography to an otherwise flat surface. This particular composition is typical of her most sought-after work from her mid-career. Her pieces have been exhibited in the Peale Museum, National Gallery of Art, The Baltimore Museum of Art, Morgan State University, Johns Hopkins University, and the College of Notre Dame.
